How did the cast members use their initial fear of Pennywise to enhance their performances?
It Chapter Two has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year – as the sequel to the critically acclaimed It (2017) and based on the Stephen King novel. But what is it like to work on a movie where the central villain is an ancient evil clown?
In an interview with Syfy Wire, the cast of the movie including Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader, discussed the first time they saw the terrifying clown, Pennywise. For many of them, it was the first day of filming, and the experience left a lasting impression.
Jessica Chastain, who plays the adult Beverly Marsh, recalled shooting the scene where she enters her old apartment and encounters the infamous red balloon. According to Chastain, director Andy Muschietti did not tell her what would happen in the scene, so when she reached for the balloon, she was shocked by the appearance of Pennywise.
“I had no idea he was going to be there, and I had a full physical reaction,” remembered Chastain, “I just remember my body freezing and going into a cold sweat.”
Bill Hader, who plays the adult Richie Tozier, had a similarly intense reaction to Pennywise. Hader, who is known for his comedic roles, was surprised by how intimidating the clown was in real life.
“He was like the size of a tree!” joked Hader, “It was terrifying. I was very scared and intimidated.”
James McAvoy, who plays the adult Bill Denbrough, also had a memorable first encounter with Pennywise. McAvoy describes the experience as “intense” and “traumatizing,” but also says that it helped him get into character for the rest of the film.
“I remember the first time I saw him, I was like, ‘Oh…oh no,'” said McAvoy, “But it really helped me embody, fear and terror.”
It Chapter Two promises to be just as scary as the first movie, with audiences looking forward to seeing even more of Pennywise. With a star-studded cast and a beloved source material, this sequel is sure to be a hit.
In the end, the cast may have been initially taken aback by Pennywise’s appearance, but they were able to channel that fear into their performances. The audience will no doubt be grateful for their dedication – and their bravery – in bringing the terror of It Chapter Two to the big screen.
