In this exclusive Game Informer video, Ben Hanson and Jeff Cork interview Monster Hunter World:
Iceborne’s sound designer Wakana Kuroiwa, composer Akihiko Narita, and executive director Kaname Fujioka about creating the sounds for Velkhana, Beotodus, and the incredible soundtrack for the upcoming Capcom expansion.
How did the sound team create Velkhana’s distinctive roar in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne?
Capcom has always been known for creating some of the most memorable characters and experiences in video game history. With the release of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, they continue to impress fans with their attention to detail and dedication to bringing each monster to life.
One of the most impressive aspects of the game is the sound design for Velkhana, the flagship monster of Iceborne. In an interview with Capcom’s sound team, it was revealed that Velkhana’s sounds were created using a combination of traditional animal noises and unique sound effects.
To create the dragon’s distinctive roar, the team recorded the sounds of a tiger and an elephant, then blended them together to create a deep, powerful roar. They also used sound effects from a lion’s growl and the hiss of an alligator to give the monster a menacing presence.
In addition to Velkhana’s sounds, the sound design team also put a tremendous amount of effort into creating the game’s music. According to Capcom’s composers, the goal was to create a memorable musical experience that not only fit the world of Monster Hunter, but also elevated the player’s emotions and immersed them in the game.
To accomplish this, the team used a combination of traditional Japanese instruments and orchestral scores. They also collaborated with a variety of musicians and vocalists, including a classical guitarist and a choir. Together, they crafted a soundtrack that perfectly captures the game’s intense battles, emotional moments, and epic scale.
Overall, Capcom’s attention to detail and dedication to creating a fully-realized world in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is evident in both the sound design and music. Velkhana’s imposing roar and the game’s dynamic soundtrack serve to enhance the player’s experience, making each battle and moment in the game truly unforgettable.
