President Trump says the findings in the report add up to an ‘overthrow’ of the US government in an impassioned reaction to Horowitz’s revelations.

What did President Trump say about the inspector general’s report?

President Donald Trump has strongly denied allegations against him regarding his relationship with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump hit back at the inspector general’s report regarding the investigation into his potential collusion with Russia, calling it “an embarrassment.”

On Monday, the Justice Department’s inspector general, Michael Horowitz, released a long-awaited report that detailed the FBI’s handling of the investigation into Russian interference in the election. The report concluded that the FBI’s probe was justified and not politically biased, despite Trump’s repeated claims to the contrary.

Trump accused the FBI of conducting a “witch hunt” against him and his campaign and accused former FBI Director James Comey of being a “liar” and a “leaker.” In a tweet, he wrote: “The IG report totally destroys James Comey and all of his minions, including the great lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page who started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people.”

Trump went on to claim that Horowitz’s report shows that the Russia probe was “plainly a hostile act” by the FBI against him and that it was an attempt to undermine his presidency. He also repeated his call for an investigation into the “origins” of the Russia probe.

The president’s comments sparked immediate backlash from Democrats and others who said that Trump was seeking to undermine the FBI and discredit the Russia investigation. Doug Jones, a Democratic senator from Alabama, blasted Trump’s comments as “total hogwash.”

“The report says there wasn’t a political bias,” Jones said on CNN. “It proves that the investigation was lawful and justified.”

The inspector general’s report also criticized Comey for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server, but concluded that his actions were not politically motivated.

In response to the report, Comey tweeted that he was “grateful” for the inspector general’s work and that he believed the FBI would “continue to put the rule of law above everything else.”

The investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election has dominated Trump’s presidency since he took office in January 2017. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation a “witch hunt” and a “hoax.”

Despite the findings of the inspector general’s report, House Democrats are pushing ahead with an impeachment inquiry against the president, citing allegations that he withheld military aid to Ukraine in an effort to pressure the country to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden. That inquiry is expected to resume next week.
