His monologue goes awry when he spots Ryan Reynolds in the audience.
What made the Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds monologue a standout moment of the show?
On November 23, 2019, Will Ferrell hosted Saturday Night Live for the fifth time, bringing his signature brand of humor to the famous Studio 8H. One moment from that night that especially stood out was Ferrell’s monologue, which had a surprise appearance from Ryan Reynolds.
Ferrell began his monologue by joking about how much he had changed since his early days on the show in the late 1990s. “Back then, I was just a young, foolish game show host,” he said, referencing his time on the sketch “Celebrity Jeopardy!” where he portrayed a clueless Alex Trebek.
Ferrell then expressed his gratitude for being able to host the show again, saying, “It’s an honor to be back here, hosting Saturday Night Live for the fifth time. That’s right—you can officially now call me ‘Really old, but not quite as old as Alec Baldwin.'”
As he continued, Ferrell suddenly paused mid-sentence, seemingly confused about what was happening. The camera then cut to Ryan Reynolds, who was sitting in the audience and had a microphone in hand. “Will, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to interrupt,” Reynolds said, “but I thought it would be funny if I just came out here and interrupted your monologue.”
Ferrell played along with the bit, pretending to be annoyed at Reynolds for stealing his spotlight. The two then riffed off each other for a few minutes, with Reynolds pretending to have his own monologue prepared (which consisted mostly of him promoting his upcoming movie). The segment ended with Ferrell telling Reynolds to get off the stage, and Reynolds responding, “You know what? I’m gonna stay right here.”
The Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds monologue was a standout moment from an already strong night of SNL. Both actors are known for their quick wit and improvisation skills, and they were able to play off each other well in this unexpected moment. It was a fun surprise for viewers, and showed that even after 45 seasons, Saturday Night Live can still pull off fresh and entertaining moments.
